Catholicism and the Holy Roman Empire While the militaristic Roman Empire was collapsing, Pope Symmachus created the Vatican Palace in 514 as the seat of the “universal religion” called Catholicism. Catholicism itself was created about 150 years before that by Emperor Constantine I, using the first Council of Nicaea in 325, to control the political and spiritual uprisings among various regions, tribes and slave groups. Thereby making Constantine I the first in a long series of Roman Emperors (or Popes) who explicitly wanted to completely rule over both the spiritual and political realm. Perhaps indicative of the lack of interest in the 1st Council of Nicaea and its Roman agenda, was that of the 1800 invites send to religious leaders, only about 300 participated. Many people still see the Papacy as only a religious organization, but if one looks into their never ending quest for the political power, you’ll see that the Roman Empire and the Papacy have always had the exact same goal: World domination. The differences are only in the execution of this neurotic idea.

Related to these ‘priesthood’ cultures is also the continuous prosecution of all natural/herbal cultures and its practitioners. From numerous genocides of indigenous cultures around the world, to the attacks on natural healthcare in Europe and the US. These people were often wrongly stigmatized and tortured and killed for being ‘gnostics’, ‘mystics’, ‘witches’, or ‘quacks’. These days the Pharmacratic Inquisitions are still going strong to benefit the global toxic-medicine based pharmaceutical industry; using weak medical schooling, medical license systems, patent law, propaganda campaigns and important natural substance prohibitions. Many believe that they are required to pay an “income tax” to a branch of the United States government called “The Internal Revenue Service”. The origins and history of the IRS shows just how in error these beliefs are. Not only is there no law that requires most Americans to file an individual tax return, but the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) wasn’t even created by an act of Congress!
Article I, Section 2, Clause 3, of the Constitution of the United States of America, in pertinent part, provides that:
“. . . direct Taxes shall be apportioned among the several States which may be included within this Union, according to their respective Numbers, which shall be determined by adding to the whole Number of free Persons . . . three-fifths of all other Persons.”
In 1894, Congress passed a law which purportedly imposed a “direct income tax” on the Citizens of the several States within this Union, but failed to make any provision for apportionment, as required by Article I, Section 2, Clause 3, of the Constitution of the United States of America. In the case of Pollack vs. Farmers Loan & Trust Co., US (1895), the U.S. Supreme Court struck the law down, as being unconstitutional, because it failed to make any provision for apportionment, as required by Article I, Section 2, Clause 3.
Thereafter, Congress passed the Sixteenth Amendment to the Constitution, which was “declared” to have been ratified in 1913. The Sixteenth Amendment provides that:
“The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration.”
The Constitutionality of the Sixteenth Amendment was challenged in the case of Brushaber vs. Union Pacific R.R. Co., 240 US 1 (1916). The U.S. Supreme Court acknowledged the apparent conflict between Article I, Section 2, Clause 3, of the Constitution, which required all direct taxes to be apportioned, and the Sixteenth Amendment, which appeared to eliminate the apportionment requirement. The Court pointed out that the Sixteenth Amendment did not repeal Article I, Section 2, Clause 3, but noted that it was under a duty to uphold the Sixteenth Amendment, if it could be interpreted in such a way so as to eliminate the conflict.
The Court did hold the Amendment constitutional, but only because it interpreted the Amendment as applying only to “indirect taxes” or “excise taxes”, and not to “direct taxes”. Brushaber and other cases that followed, stated that the Sixteenth Amendment did not give Congress any new or additional taxing powers that it did not already have, but merely put into written form the state of the law as it previously existed.
Congress did not pass any other law intended to impose a direct tax on income until 1939, when the Public Salary Tax Act of 1939 was passed. The Public Salary Tax Act, Section 1, (which is now designated as 26 USC 1) imposed a tax upon the income of federal employees, U.S. citizens, and non-resident aliens. The term “United States” is defined in 26 USC 7701(9), as: “When used in a geographical sense, the term ‘United States’ means only the states and the District of Columbia. Section 7701(10) defines the term “States” as follows: ” The term ‘States’ shall be construed to include the District of Columbia when necessary to carry out the purpose of this title”.
It is always necessary to construe the term “States” as including the District of Columbia, because Congress did not include the fifty (50) states, nor the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, the Virgin Islands, or American Samoa. The Public Salary Tax Act of 1939 did not apply to Citizens of the forty-eight (48) States (now the fifty (50) States).
After Pearl Harbor was bombed by Japan on December 7, 1941, Congress declared war, and passed the Victory Tax Act of 1942, in order to raise money to support an Army. This was done in accordance with Article I, Section 8, Clause 12, of the Constitution of the United States of America, which provides:
“The Congress shall have Power . . . To raise and support Armies, but no Appropriation of Money to that Use shall be for a longer Term than two Years;”
In 1942, for the first time in the history of this country, the Bureau of Internal Revenue sent out 1040 Form to the general public in the forty-eight States. This was done even though the Victory Tax Act of 1942 only applied to citizens and residents of the District of Columbia, and non-resident aliens.
Most people thought that the Victory Tax Act required everyone to file a tax return and pay tax on “income”, so they voluntarily filed a Form 1040 in 1942, 1943 and 1944. On May 29, 1944, Congress repealed the Victory Tax Act of 1942, but the news media did not publicize that fact. In 1945, the Bureau of Internal Revenue decided to mass mail 1040 Forms to the general public, just to see what would happen. Why not? The vast majority of the people had voluntarily file tax returns before. Since the public believed that the Victory Tax Act was mandatory in the then forty-eight (48) States, and did not know that it had been repealed, they filled out the 1040 Forms and mailed them in, along with their checks.
The Bureau of Internal Revenue was ecstatic and committed itself to continue perpetrating the fraud on the Citizens of the forty-eight (48) States. So, the Bureau of Internal Revenue has continued to send out Form 1040’s each and every year since.
Don’t be fooled. The “Internal Revenue Code” was first enacted in 1939 and was called the “Public Salary Tax Act of 1939”. Since that time, the name of the Public Salary Tax Act was changed to the “Internal Revenue Code”, which was amended in 1953 and 1987. However, the amendments did not change the fact that it only applies to the District of Columbia and the federal territories and possessions.
There is no provision in the Internal Revenue Code that imposes a direct income tax on the Citizens of the fifty (50) States, nor a requirement to file an income tax return, unless employed by the Federal Government. If you are a Citizen of Florida, a Republic, or any other state, and not a Federal Employee, nor a citizen or resident of the District of Columbia, you are not required by law to file a U.S. Individual Income Tax Return.
Form 1040
26 CFR 602.101, contains a cross-reference table, showing that the only form authorized for use in filing a “U.S. Individual Income Tax return” is assigned OMB Number 1545-0067. That number only appears on Form 2555, entitled “Foreign Earned Income”, and states that it is to be attached to a Form 1040. Form 1040 is assigned OMB Number 1545-0074, and is only authorized to be used for reporting various types of “credits” to be set off against the “Foreign Earned Income” reported on Form 2555. If you did not have any “Foreign Earned Income” during a year, you cannot file a Form 2555 without committing perjury. If you did not need to claim any tax credits during the year, there is no need or requirement to file a Form 1040.
Form 941
The definition of “Withholding Agent” contained in 26 USC 7701(16), which provides:
Section 1441 is entitled “Withholding of tax on nonresident aliens”. Section 1442 is entitled “Withholding tax on foreign corporations”. Section 1443 is entitled “Foreign tax-exempt organizations”. Section 1461 is entitled “Liability for withheld tax” and provides that:
“Every person required to deduct and withhold any tax under this chapter is hereby made liable for such tax and is hereby indemnified against the claims and demands of any person for the amount of any payments made in accordance with the provisions of this chapter.”
26 USC, Chapter 24, Collection of Income Tax At Source, Withholding From Wages, Section 3401, Definitions, states:
“(a) Wages.
For purposes of this chapter, the term “wages” means all remuneration (other than fees paid to a public official) for services performed by an employee for his employer,
. . . .
“(c) Employee.
For purposes of this chapter, the term “employee” includes an officer, employee, or elected official of the United States, a State, or any political subdivision thereof, or the District of Columbia, or any agency or instrumentality of any one or more of the foregoing. The term “employee” also includes an officer of a corporation.”“(d) Employer.
For purposes of the chapter, the term “employer” means the person for whom an individual performs or performed any service, of whatever nature, as the employee of such person, . . .”If you have never applied for appointment, nor have been appointed, as a “Withholding Agent”, and have never been required to withhold “wages”, pursuant to the provisions of Sections 1441, 1442 or 1443. Nor if you have never paid any “wages” to a “foreign alien” or “foreign corporation”, you would not be liable for any wages withheld from nonresident aliens or foreign corporations under the provisions of Section 1461, of the Internal Revenue Code, therefore, you would not be required to file a Form 941.
The Authority of the Internal Revenue Service
to operate within the fifty (50) States
The Bureau of Internal Revenue and the alleged Internal Revenue Service were not created by any Act of Congress. These are not organizations or agencies of the Department of the Treasury, or of the federal government. They appear to be operated through pure trusts administered by the Secretary of the Treasury (the Trustee). The Settlor of the trusts and the Beneficiary or Beneficiaries are unknown. According to the law governing trusts, that information does not have to be revealed. You will not find the Bureau of Internal Revenue, or the Internal Revenue Service, or the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms fisted in 31 USC, Chapter 3, as an authorized agency of the Department of the Treasury.
The Philippine Customs Administrative Act was passed by the Philippine Commission between 1900 and 1902, which created Trust Fund #1, the Philippine special fund (customs duties) (31 USC 1321). The Act was administered under the general supervision and control of the Secretary of Finance and Justice. The Philippine Commission passed another Act known as the Internal Revenue Law of Nineteen Hundred and Four.
This Act created the “Bureau of Internal Revenue” and the federal government’s second trust fund, Trust Fund #2, the Philippine special fund (internal revenue). Article 1, Section 1, of the Act provides that: “There shall be established a Bureau of Internal Revenue, the chief officer of which Bureau shall be known as the Collector of Internal Revenue. He shall be appointed by the Civil Governor, with the advice and consent of the Philippine Commission, and shall receive a salary at the rate of eight thousand pesos per annum. The Bureau of Internal Revenue shall belong to the Department of Finance and Justice.” At some unknown date, before 1940, another Bureau of Internal Revenue was established in Puerto Rico, along with Trust fund #62 Puerto Rico (Internal Revenue). These two Bureaus are the only Bureaus of Internal Revenue which have ever existed, one in the Philippines and the other in Puerto Rico. In 1953, the United States relinquished its control over the Philippines.
The Federal Alcohol Administration Act of 1935 was declared unconstitutional in 1935, and the operation was then transferred off shore to Puerto Rico. 27 CFR 250.1 1 provides the following definitions:
“Revenue Agent. Any duly authorized commonwealth Internal Revenue Agent of the Department of the Treasury of Puerto Rico.”
“Secretary. The Secretary of the Treasury of Puerto Rico.
“Secretary or his delegate. The Secretary or any officer or employee of the Department of the Treasury of Puerto Rico duly authorized by the Secretary to perform the function mentioned or described in this part.”
In the absence of any other definition describing revenue officers and agents, Secretary, or the Department of the Treasury, the definitions above are uniformly applicable to all IRS and BATF departments, functions and personnel.
Through Reorganization Plan No 3 of 1940, the federal Alcohol Administration and the offices of the Administrator were abolished and their functions were thereafter administered under the supervision of the Secretary of the Treasury through the Bureau of Internal Revenue in the Department of the Treasury. On July 9, 1953, the Secretary of the Treasury, G. K. Humphrey, created the Internal Revenue Service with the stroke of a pen, by issuing Treasury Order 150-06, without the approval of Congress.
On June 6, 1972, Acting Secretary of the Treasury, Charles E. Walker signed Treasury Order Number 120-01, which established the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, pursuant to his authority conferred under Reorganization Plan No. 26 of 1950. This was also done without the authority of Congress.
Based upon all of the foregoing citations, it is obvious that all Revenue Agents and Officers work as employees of the Department of the Treasury of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.
The Internal Revenue Service does not have any jurisdiction or authority over a Sovereign Citizen of Florida, a Republic, or any other state or commonwealth, to enforce the inapplicable provisions of the Internal Revenue Code, with which the IRS may contend that you are required to comply. The “Internal Revenue Service” has no legal jurisdiction in Florida or any of the other forty-nine (49) States. Everything the Internal Revenue Service does, assumes a self-appointed, self-serving authority and pseudo jurisdiction, under color of law, to conduct an administrative proceeding against anyone. The IRS is perpetrating the greatest income tax fraud on the Citizens that this country has ever seen.

Of course, beauty can seem silly because we have been taught that it’s not important. We have been trained to resist beauty, to avoid looking it in the face, and to even to suspect it of deception. We have been told to be clever instead and to mask how we really feel. But when we resist beauty’s call, we lose our very selves.
Humanity has forgotten so much beauty, and so we have forgotten ourselves. We’ve created ugliness instead, and so we have greatly suffered. So often, too, we have let others tell us what is beautiful, even when it is not. We haven’t listened to what moves us to the core, and so we’ve confused beauty with artifice that has no lasting value. If you look closely, you will notice just how well we have all been trained to uphold what is trendy and fashionable – to fixate on celebrity, royalty, and society, and admire exclusivity. The very hierarchy that harms us has been made to seem desirable. It goes without saying that this is not beauty.
I have always felt that our modern world is lacking beauty and this feels incredibly jarring. Since I was a child, I’ve noticed that so much of what humanity creates is ugly, wasteful, and depleted. It feels painful to see the endless waste, to see the ground robbed of trees and ripped open, the sky filled with toxic smoke, and the land covered in barren asphalt and concrete. It is bewildering to me that humankind can render places completely devoid of life – places that once sang with the beauty of nature. We have destroyed our very home by letting our egos take over with short-term greed. We have devalued beauty and sold it quickly at perilous cost.
Beauty is calling out to humanity, if only we will listen. We must realize that we are responsible for what we create, and that creating with beauty resonates with the soul. Beauty sparks our greatest passions and reminds us of the exquisite creativity we are capable of – the one-of-a-kind talents we have each brought to this earth.And when we give in to the creative flow of the present moment, we find our beautiful selves again. We get back to the innocence inside – that pure, unaffected, uncalculating, and unpretentious source within all life; our spiritual beauty beyond compare.
Right now, we are being given giant opportunities to open ourselves up to high spiritual beauty so we can emerge as entirely upgraded human beings. If you haven’t already done so, open yourself up to the energies of transformation that are flooding our planet and allow them to bring out the exquisite beauty in you. Allow yourself to fully feel the emotions that beauty stirs up, whether from a haunting piece of music, a romantic poem, or the kindness of a human being. Let yourself be moved by the sublime, the poetic and the profound, and love this feeling with all of your heart!

What we discovered about ancient human this year
This year, huge strides were made in unravelling some of the mysteries of our ancient ancestors. For example, in the first ever analysis of a virtually complete Neanderthal genome, scientists were able to prove that rampant interbreeding occurred between Humans, Neanderthals and other species, resulting in an incredibly complex family tree. However, other studies revealed that there is so much more about our ancestry that we still don’t know, such as several studies pointing to the possibility of a completely unknown ancient human lineage. Here is a snap shot of some of the most significant studies to be made in 2013 relating to our ancient human origins.
What was revealed about Inter-breeding and how it formed our family tree
It was long believed that Neanderthals became extinct before modern Humans even emerged. However, this theory was later revised and it became accepted that Neanderthals and modern Humans had a cross-over of thousands of years, but never encountered each other. New evidence caused a revision yet again, this time saying that Neanderthals and modern Humans did indeed encounter each other but never interbred. And this year, in yet another shake-up of old theories, a number of studies have presented evidence that Humans and Neanderthals did interbreed and produce offspring.
In one of the most dramatic studies that have been seen in many years, scientists were able to extract DNA from a 50,000-year-old fossil that came from a Neanderthal woman found in a Siberian cave and piece together the Neanderthal genome to the same level of detail that has been achieved in modern day humans. The results showed that ancient human species, including Neanderthals, Denisovans and Homo sapiens mated with each other, resulting in an incredibly complex family tree. In fact, it was found that about 1.5 to 2.1 percent of the DNA of people with European ancestry can be traced to Neanderthals; proportions of Neanderthal DNA are higher among Asians and Native Americans, who also have small percentages of Denisovan DNA; six percent of the genome of Australian Aborigines and indigenous Papua New Guineans belong to the Denisovan species; and only 96 genes responsible for making proteins in cells are different between modern humans and Neanderthals.
This supports a unique finding made in a rock shelter in Lisbon, Portugal some years ago, in which archaeologists uncovered the bones of a four-year-old child, comprising the first complete Palaeolithic skeleton ever dug in Iberia. The significance of the discovery was that an analysis of the bones revealed that the child, who became known as ‘the Lapedo Child’, had the chin and lower arms of a human, but the jaw and build of a Neanderthal, suggesting that he was a hybrid, the result of interbreeding between the two species.
However, the study on the fossil found in the Siberian cave produced another totally unexpected finding – the Denisovans share up to 8 percent of their genome with a “super archaic” and totally unknown species that dates back around 1 million years. It appears that the Denisovans bred with a mystery species from Asia – one that is neither human nor Neanderthal. Traces of the unknown new genome were detected in two teeth and a finger bone of a Denisovan. In fact, there have been several studies this year which have all pointed to the fact that there is unknown species in our family tree that is yet to be identified.
A mysterious unknown lineage
A landmark study this year revealed the oldest known human DNA ever to be found, dating back approximately 400,000 years – substantially older than the previous earliest human DNA from a 100,000-year-old Neanderthal. It came from a hominin found in Sima de los Huesos, the “bone pit”, which is a cave site in Northern Spain. Initial analysis on the DNA revealed a complex and confusing interbreeding of species which took place in our ancient past. The scientists were able to use novel techniques to extract the DNA and determined an almost complete mitochondrial genome sequence of a 400,000-year-old representative of the Homo genus. The researchers then compared the DNA with Neanderthals, Denisovans, and present-day humans, and found that the individual shared a common ancestor with the Denisovans, a relatively newfound relative of humans who are thought to have lived in the vast expanse from Siberia to Southeast Asia. This was unexpected since the skeletal remains carry Neanderthal-derived features. In addition, the fossil was uncovered in Europe and not eastern Asia where it was believed the Denisovans lived. The investigators suggested that a currently unknown species brought Denisovan-like DNA into the Pit of Bones region, and possibly also to the Denisovans in Asia.
In yet another study pointing towards an unknown relative, an international team of scientists investigated the topic by examining the shape of a diverse range of dental fossils. Around 1,200 molars and premolars from 13 species or types of hominins (humans and human relatives and ancestors) were examined and results showed that none of the hominin species fit the expected profile of an ancestor of Neanderthals and modern humans. The researchers also presented evidence that the lines that led to Neanderthals and modern humans diverged nearly 1 million years ago, and not 350,000 years ago as previous studies based on molecular evidence suggested. It was found that none of the species that had been previously suggested as the last common ancestors of Neanderthals and Homo sapiens were a match, leading to the conclusion that another species existed that is yet to be discovered.
What we uncovered about our ancestors
Modern humans (Homo sapiens) are the only living member of the human lineage, Homo, which is thought to have arisen in Africa about 2 million years ago at the beginning of the Ice Age. But many other now-extinct human species were thought to once roam the planet, such as Homo habilis, Homo rudolfensis, Homo ergaster, and Homo erectus. However, in a dramatic discovery made this year, scientists have suggests that these early human ancestors many not have been multiple human species at all, but instead variants of a single species. The evidence comes from a skull found in Dmanisi, Georgia, the 5th skull to be discovered in the region. All the other skulls were found in the same location and date from the same time period (suggesting the same species), but looked quite different from each other. Until now it was believed that different characteristics among the Homo fossils, including those from Homo habilis, Homo rudolfensis and Homo erectus, showed they were distinct, different species. However, this research suggests the individuals belonged to the same species – according to the researchers, the differences between the Dmanisi fossils are no more pronounced than those between five modern humans. If this is the case, researchers will be forced to rewrite the classification system for early human ancestors.
What we discovered about hobbits
In 2003, the remains of an early human species, Homo floresiensis, were discovered on the island of Flores in Indonesia and were dated to have lived between 95,000 and 17,000 years ago. Nicknamed ‘hobbit’ for its small stature (approximately 3 feet 6 inches tall) and large feet, Homo floresiensis has been the subject of much debate and intense research to determine whether they represent a species distinct from modern humans, or whether the remains belonged to a modern human (Homo sapien) with a disorder such as microcephalia, a condition characterized by a small head, short stature and some mental retardation. This year, research using 3D comparative analysis confirmed that the Hobbit was indeed a distinct Homo species, but looked more like ‘us’ than previously realised.
What we learned about Neanderthals
This year, researchers found evidence in a collapsed rock shelter in Italy that Neanderthals kept organised and tidy homes with separate spaces for preparing food, sleeping, making tools and socialising. A new study also suggested that Neanderthals may have passed on their tool-making skills to modern humans. Dutch scientists discovered 50,000-year-old tools made from deer ribs in south-west France, which were believed to signify the transmission of knowledge and skill from Neanderthals to modern humans, as they are similar to others found at sites occupied by early modern humans at a later stage.
In a recent study, researchers found evidence in a cave in France that Neanderthals intentionally buried their dead. The individual had been carefully placed in a grave and great care had been taken to protect his body from scavengers. Other studies revealed that Neanderthals were capable of a form of modern language and speech.
The discoveries add to growing evidence that Neanderthals, once viewed as dim-witted and primitive, had a high level of technological ability and had intelligence and culture that was in fact on par with modern humans.
Human Origins in the Americas
Scientists made an incredible discovery in a streambed in southern Uruguay – a set of 30,000-year-old fossilised animals which show distinctive marks left by human tools. The immense significance of the discovery is that mainstream archaeology says that humans began arriving in the Americas between 13,000 and 15,000 years ago, and the Clovis people of North and Central America are generally considered the “first Americans.” But these results show that humans inhabited the Americas at least 15,000 years before previously thought.
In another finding, the DNA of a young boy found in eastern Siberia may hold the key to unravelling the mystery of where Native Americans originated. The 24,000 year-old remains revealed two major surprises for anthropologists when they completed an analysis of his genome. The remains of the boy, aged 3 to 4 years old, were found buried at Mal’ta near Lake Baikal in eastern Siberia. The team discovered that the boy’s DNA matched that of Western Europeans, showing that during the last Ice Age people from Europe reached much further east across Eurasia than previously believed. Incredulous at the results, they decided to test the DNA of an adult who died 17,000 years ago, found at a second Siberian grave site – they found the same markers of European origin. The results indicated that Europeans occupied Siberia during the Last Glacial Maximum approximately 20,000 years ago. But that was not all. The results also showed that a quarter of the boy’s DNA matched that of living Native Americans. Until now it was believed that Native Americans descended from East Asians in Siberia. Now it seems that they descended from a mixture of Western Europeans who had reached Siberia and the East Asian population. A European contribution to Native American ancestry could explain two longstanding mysteries about their origins. One is that many ancient Native American skulls, including that of the well-known Kennewick man, look very different from those of the present day population. Another is that one of the five mitochondrial DNA lineages found in Native Americans, the lineage known as X, also occurs in Europeans.
While huge progress is being made on a daily basis, scientists have a long way to go in resolving discrepancies in the fossil record. The studies cited above have added amazing insights into our past but have also shown how much we still don’t know. Let’s see what 2014 will bring…

Dr. Dong-Pyou Han from Iowa State University has resigned this week after admitting he spiked rabbit blood samples with healthy human blood to falsely show the presence of antibodies that would “prove” his AIDS vaccine worked.
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) was so convinced by the fraud that they gave Han $19 million in research funding. The Ancient Origins of New Year’s Celebrations

On the 1st January of every year, many countries around the world celebrate the beginning of a new year. But there is nothing new about New Year’s. In fact, festivals and celebrations marking the beginning of the calendar have been around for thousands of years. While some festivities were simply a chance to drink and be merry, many other New Year celebrations were linked to agricultural or astronomical events. In Egypt, for instance, the year began with the annual flooding of the Nile, which coincided with the rising of the star Sirius. The Phoenicians and Persians began their new year with the spring equinox, and the Greeks celebrated it on the winter solstice. The first day of the Chinese New Year, meanwhile, occurred with the second new moon after the winter solstice.
The Celebration of Akitu in Babylon
The earliest recorded New Year’s festivity dates back some 4,000 years to ancient Babylon, and was deeply intertwined with religion and mythology. For the Babylonians of ancient Mesopotamia, the first new moon following the vernal equinox—the day in late March with an equal amount of sunlight and darkness—heralded the start of a new year and represented the rebirth of the natural world. They marked the occasion with a massive religious festival called Akitu (derived from the Sumerian word for barley, which was cut in the spring) that involved a different ritual on each of its 11 days. During the Akitu, statues of the gods were paraded through the city streets, and rites were enacted to symbolize their victory over the forces of chaos. Through these rituals the Babylonians believed the world was symbolically cleansed and recreated by the gods in preparation for the new year and the return of spring.
In addition to the new year, Atiku celebrated the mythical victory of the Babylonian sky god Marduk over the evil sea goddess Tiamat and served an important political purpose: it was during this time that a new king was crowned or that the current ruler’s divine mandate was renewed. One fascinating aspect of the Akitu involved a kind of ritual humiliation endured by the Babylonian king. This peculiar tradition saw the king brought before a statue of the god Marduk, stripped of his royal regalia, slapped and dragged by his ears in the hope of making him cry. If royal tears were shed, it was seen as a sign that Marduk was satisfied and had symbolically extended the king’s rule.
Ancient Roman Celebration of Janus
The Roman New Year also originally corresponded with the vernal equinox. The early Roman calendar consisted of 10 months and 304 days, with each new year beginning at the vernal equinox. According to tradition, the calendar was created by Romulus, the founder of Rome, in the eighth century B.C. However, over the centuries, the calendar fell out of sync with the sun, and in 46 B.C. the emperor Julius Caesar decided to solve the problem by consulting with the most prominent astronomers and mathematicians of his time. He introduced the Julian calendar, a solar-based calendar which closely resembles the more modern Gregorian calendar that most countries around the world use today.
As part of his reform, Caesar instituted January 1 as the first day of the year, partly to honour the month’s namesake: Janus, the Roman god of change and beginnings, whose two faces allowed him to look back into the past and forward into the future. This idea became tied to the concept of transition from one year to the next.
Romans would celebrate January 1st by offering sacrifices to Janus in the hope of gaining good fortune for the New Year, decorating their homes with laurel branches and attending raucous parties. This day was seen as setting the stage for the next twelve months, and it was common for friends and neighbours to make a positive start to the year by exchanging well wishes and gifts of figs and honey with one another.
Middle Ages: January 1st Abolished
In medieval Europe, however, the celebrations accompanying the New Year were considered pagan and unchristian-like, and in 567 AD the Council of Tours abolished January 1st as the beginning of the year, replacing it with days carrying more religious significance, such as December 25th or March 25th, the Feast of the Annunciation, also called “Lady Day”.
The date of January 1st was also given Christian significance and became known as the Feast of the Circumcision, considered to be the eighth day of Christ’s life counting from December 25th and following the Jewish tradition of circumcision eight days after birth on which the child is formally given his or her name. However, the date of December 25th for the birth of Jesus is debatable.
Gregorian Calendar: January 1st Restored
In 1582, after reform of the Gregorian calendar, Pope Gregory XIII re-established January 1st as New Year’s Day. Although most Catholic countries adopted the Gregorian calendar almost immediately, it was only gradually adopted among Protestant countries. The British, for example, did not adopt the reformed calendar until 1752. Until then, the British Empire, and their American colonies, still celebrated the New Year in March.

The Little Soul and the Sun
Once upon no time there was a Little Soul who said to God, “I know who I am!”
And God said, “That’s wonderful! Who are you?”
And the Little Soul shouted, “I’m the Light!”
God smiled a big smile, “That’s right!” God exclaimed. “You are the Light.”
The Little Soul was so happy, for it had figured out what all the souls in the Kingdom were there to figure out. “Wow,” said the Little Soul, “this is really cool!”
But soon, knowing who it was was not enough. The Little Soul felt stirrings inside, and now wanted to be who it was. And so the Little Soul went back to God (which is not a bad idea for all souls who want to be Who They Really Are) and said, “Hi, God! Now that I know Who I Am, is it okay for me to be it?”
And God said, “You mean you want to be Who You Already Are?
“Well,” replied the Little Soul, “it’s one thing to know Who I Am, and another thing altogether to actually be it. I want to feel what it’s like to be the Light!”
“But you already are the Light,” God repeated, smiling again.
“Yes, but I want to see what that feels like!” cried the Little Soul.
“Well,” said God with a chuckle, “I suppose I should have known. You always were the adventuresome one.” Then
God’s expression changed. “There’s only one thing…”
“What?” asked the Little Soul.
“Well, there is nothing else but the Light. You see, I created nothing but what you are; and so, there is no easy way for you to experience yourself as Who You Are, since there is nothing that you are not.”
“Huh?” said the Little Soul, who was not a little confused.
“Think of it this way,” said God. “You are like a candle in the Sun. Oh, you’re there all right. Along with a million, ka-gillion other candles who make up the Sun. And the sun would not be the Sun without you. Nay, it would be a sun without one of its candles…and that would not be the Sun at all; for it would not shine as brightly. Yet, how to know yourself as the Light when you are amidst the Light–that is the question.”
“Well,” the Little Soul perked up, “you’re God. Think of something!”
Once more God smiled. “I already have,” God said. “Since you cannot see yourself as the Light when you are in the Light, we’ll surround you with darkness.”
“What’s darkness?” the Little Soul asked.
God replied, “It is that which you are not.”
“Will I be afraid of the dark?” cried the Little Soul.
“Only if you choose to be,” God answered. “There is nothing, really, to be afraid of, unless you decide that there is. You see, we are making it all up. We are pretending.”
“Oh,” said the Little Soul, and felt better already.
Then God explained that, in order to experience anything at all, the exact opposite of it will appear.
“It is a great gift,” God said, “because without it, you could not know what anything is like. You could not know Warm without Cold, Up without Down, Fast without Slow. You could not know Left without Right, Here without There, Now without Then.”
“And so,” God concluded, “when you are surrounded with darkness, do not shake your fist and raise your voice and curse the darkness. Rather be a Light unto the darkness, and don’t be mad about it. Then you will know Who You Really Are, and all others will know, too. Let your Light shine so that everyone will know how special you are!”
“You mean it’s okay to let others see how special I am?” asked the Little Soul.
“Of course!” God chuckled. “It’s very okay! But remember, ‘special’ does not mean ‘better.’ Everybody is special, each in their own way! Yet many others have forgotten that. They will see that it is okay for them to be special only when you see that it is okay for you to be special.”
“Wow,” said the Little Soul, dancing and skipping and laughing and jumping with joy. “I can be as special as I want to be!”
“Yes, and you can start right now,” said God, who was dancing and skipping and laughing right along with the Little Soul.
“What part of special do you want to be?”
“What part of special?” the Little Soul repeated. “I don’t understand.”
“Well,” God explained, “being the Light is being special, and being special has a lot of parts to it. It is special to be kind. It is special to be gentle. It is special to be creative. It is special to be patient. Can you think of any other ways it is special to be?”
The Little Soul sat quietly for a moment. “I can think of lots of ways to be special!” the Little Soul then exclaimed. “It is special to be helpful. It is special to be sharing. It is special to be friendly. It is special to be considerate of others!”
“Yes!” God agreed, “and you can be all of those things, or any part of special you wish to be, at any moment. That’s what it means to be the Light.”
“I know what I want to be, I know what I want to be!” the Little Soul announced with great excitement. “I want to be the part of special called ‘forgiving’. Isn’t it special to be forgiving?”
“Oh, yes,” God assured the Little Soul. “That is very special.”
“Okay,” said the Little Soul. “That’s what I want to be. I want to be forgiving. I want to experience myself as that.”
“Good,” said God, “but there’s one thing you should know.”
The Little Soul was becoming a bit impatient now. It always seemed as though there were some complication.
“What is it?” the Little Soul sighed.
“There is no one to forgive.”
“No one?” The Little Soul could hardly believe what had been said.
“No one!” God repeated. “Everything I have made is perfect. There is not a single soul in all creation less perfect than you. Look around you.”
It was then that the Little Soul realized a large crowd had gathered. Souls had come from far and wide ~ from all over the Kingdom ~ for the word had gone forth that the Little Soul was having this extraordinary conversation with God, and everyone wanted to hear what they were saying. Looking at the countless other souls gathered there, the Little Soul had to agree. None appeared less wonderful, less magnificent, or less perfect than the Little Soul itself. Such was the wonder of the souls gathered around, and so bright was their Light, that the Little Soul could scarcely gaze upon them.
“Who, then, to forgive?” asked God.
“Boy, this is going to be no fun at all!” grumbled the Little Soul. “I wanted to experience myself as One Who Forgives. I wanted to know what that part of special felt like.”
And the Little Soul learned what it must feel like to be sad. But just then a Friendly Soul stepped forward from the crowd.
“Not to worry, Little Soul,” the Friendly Soul said, “I will help you.”
“You will?” the Little Soul brightened. “But what can you do?”
“Why, I can give you someone to forgive!”
“You can?”
“Certainly!” chirped the Friendly Soul. “I can come into your next lifetime and do something for you to forgive.”
“But why? Why would you do that?” the Little Soul asked. “You, who are a Being of such utter perfection! You, who vibrate with such a speed that it creates a Light so bright that I can hardly gaze upon you! What could cause you to want to slow down your vibration to such a speed that your bright Light would become dark and dense? What could cause you ~ who are so light that you dance upon the stars and move through the Kingdom with the speed of your thought–to come into my life and make yourself so heavy that you could do this bad thing?”
“Simple,” the Friendly Soul said. “I would do it because I love you.”
The Little Soul seemed surprised at the answer.
“Don’t be so amazed,” said the Friendly Soul, “you have done the same thing for me. Don’t you remember? Oh, we have danced together, you and I, many times. Through the eons and across all the ages have we danced. Across all time and in many places have we played together. You just don’t remember.”
“We have both been All Of It. We have been the Up and the Down of it, the Left and the Right of it. We have been the Here and the There of it, the Now and the Then of it. We have been the male and the female, the good and the bad; we have both been the victim and the villain of it.”
“Thus have we come together, you and I, many times before; each bringing to the other the exact and perfect opportunity to Express and to Experience Who We Really Are. And so,” the Friendly Soul explained further, “I will come into your next lifetime and be the ‘bad one’ this time. I will do something really terrible, and then you can experience yourself as the One Who Forgives.”
“But what will you do?” the Little Soul asked, just a little nervously, “that will be so terrible?”
“Oh,” replied the Friendly Soul with a twinkle, “we’ll think of something.”
Then the Friendly Soul seemed to turn serious, and said in a quiet voice, “You are right about one thing, you know.”
“What is that?” the Little Soul wanted to know.
“I will have to slow down my vibration and become very heavy to do this not-so-nice thing. I will have to pretend to be something very unlike myself. And so, I have but one favor to ask of you in return.”
“Oh, anything, anything!” cried the Little Soul, and began to dance and sing, “I get to be forgiving, I get to be forgiving!”
Then the Little Soul saw that the Friendly Soul was remaining very quiet.
“What is it?” the Little Soul asked. “What can I do for you? You are such an angel to be willing to do this for me!”
“Of course this Friendly Soul is an angel!” God interrupted. “Everyone is! Always remember: I have sent you nothing but angels.”
And so the Little Soul wanted more than ever to grant the Friendly Soul’s request. “What can I do for you?” the Little Soul asked again.
“In the moment that I strike you and smite you,” the Friendly Soul replied, “in the moment that I do the worst to you that you could possible imagine ~ in that very moment…”
“Yes?” the Little Soul interrupted, “yes…?”
“Remember Who I Really Am.”
“Oh, I will!” cried the Little Soul, “I promise! I will always remember you as I see you right here, right now!”
“Good,” said the Friendly Soul, “because, you see, I will have been pretending so hard, I will have forgotten myself. And if you do not remember me as I really am, I may not be able to remember for a very long time. And if I forget Who I Am, you may even forget Who You Are, and we will both be lost. Then we will need another soul to come along and remind us both of Who We Are.”
“No, we won’t!” the Little Soul promised again. “I will remember you! And I will thank you for bringing me this gift ~ the chance to experience myself as Who I Am.”
And so, the agreement was made. And the Little Soul went forth into a new lifetime, excited to be the Light, which was very special, and excited to be that part of special called Forgiveness.
And the Little Soul waited anxiously to be able to experience itself as Forgiveness, and to thank whatever other soul made it possible. And at all the moments in that new lifetime, whenever a new soul appeared on the scene, whether that new soul brought joy or sadness–and especially if it brought sadness–the Little Soul thought of what God had said.
“Always remember,” God had smiled, “I have sent you nothing but angels.”

The time around December 21 or 22 is a very important day for our planet and its relationship with the sun. December 21 is one of two solstices, days when the rays of the sun directly strike one of the two tropical latitude lines. In 2013 at precisely 12:11 p.m. EST (17:11 UTC) on December 21, 2012 winter begins in the Northern Hemisphere and summer begins in the Southern Hemisphere.
The earth spins around its axis, an imaginary line going right through the planet between the north and south poles. The axis is tilted somewhat off the plane of the earth’s revolution around the sun. The tilt of the axis is 23.5 degrees; thanks to this tilt, we enjoy the four seasons. For several months of the year, one half of the earth receives more direct rays of the sun than the other half.
The earth’s axis always points to the same point in the universe. When the axis points away from the sun from December to March (because of the relative location of the earth to the sun), the southern hemisphere enjoys the direct rays of the sun during their summer months. Alternatively, when the axis tilts towards the sun, as it does between June and September, it is summer in the northern hemisphere but winter in the southern hemisphere.
December 21 is called the winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere and simultaneously the summer solstice in the Southern Hemisphere. On June 21 the solstices are reversed and summer begins in the northern hemisphere.
On December 21, there are 24 hours of daylight south of the Antarctic Circle (66.5° south of the equator) and 24 hours of darkness north of the Arctic Circle (66.5° north of the equator). The sun’s rays are directly overhead along the Tropic of Capricorn (the latitude line at 23.5° south, passing through Brazil, South Africa, and Australia) on December 21.
Without the tilt of the earth’s axis, we would have no seasons. The sun’s rays would be directly overhead of the equator all year long. Only a slight change would occur as the earth makes its slightly elliptical orbit around the sun. The earth is furthest from the sun about July 3; this point is known as the aphelion and the earth is 94,555,000 miles away from the sun. The perihelion takes place about January 4 when the earth is a mere 91,445,000 miles from the sun.
When summer occurs in a hemisphere, it is due to that hemisphere receiving more direct rays of the sun than the opposite hemisphere where it is winter. In winter, the sun’s energy hits the earth at oblique angles and is thus less concentrated.
During spring and fall, the earth’s axis is pointing sideways so both hemispheres have moderate weather and the rays of the sun are directly overhead the equator. Between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn (23.5° latitude south) there really are no seasons as the sun is never very low in the sky so it stays warm and humid (“tropical”) year-round. Only those people in the upper latitudes north and south of the tropics experience seasons.

The Ancient Origins of Santa Claus
Every year millions of children around the world anxiously wait for the arrival of Santa Claus. Parents tell stories of the man with the white beard, red coat and polished boots who travels the world with his reindeer bearing gifts for all those who were well-behaved. Perhaps one day, parents will also tell the story of the real Santa Claus – a man who dedicated his life to charity and gift-giving.The real story of Santa Claus begins with Saint Nicholas (270 – 343 AD), who was born in the village of Patara, an area which was once Greek but is now part of Turkey. He was born to wealthy parents, who died in an epidemic while Nicholas was still young. Nicholas used his entire inheritance to assist the needy, the sick, and the suffering. One account of Nicholas tells that he presented three impoverished daughters with dowries so that they would not have to become prostitutes. On three different occasions, the bags of gold providing the dowries had appeared in their home. They had been tossed through an open window and are said to have landed in stockings or shoes left before the fire to dry. This led to the custom of children hanging stockings or putting out shoes, eagerly awaiting gifts from Saint Nicholas.
Nicholas was made Bishop of Myra while still a young man and became known throughout the land for his generosity to those in need and his love for children. Thus began the tradition of gift-giving in honour of Saint Nicholas, whose modern name Santa Claus, comes from the Dutch ‘Sinterklaas’.
Saint Nicholas died on 6th December, 343 AD and so on the eve of his death, children were bestowed gifts in his honour. December 6th is still the main day for gift giving in many countries in Europe. In other countries, the day of gifts was moved in the course of the Reformation and its opposition to the veneration of saints in many countries on the 24th and 25th December.
Nicholas’ tomb in Myra became a popular place of pilgrimage. Because of the many wars and attacks in the region, some Christians were concerned that access to the tomb might become difficult. So in 1087, most of his bones were moved to Bari in Italy, where they remain to this day. A basilica was constructed the same year to store his remains and the area became a pilgrimage site for the devout.
An anatomy professor from the University of Bari, who catalogued, measured, and photographed the saint’s remains in 1957 tried to sketch what Nicholas would look like if soft tissues were present on the skull, and in 2004, a facial anthropologist attempted to create a reconstruction by applying the latest computer diagnostic techniques to the data gathered in 1957. The results can be viewed here.
Many of the modern ideas of Santa Claus have been attributed to the poem by Clement Clarke Moore, “A Visit from St. Nicholas” (better known today as “The Night Before Christmas”) in the Troy, New York, Sentinel on December 23, 1823
Many of his modern attributes are established in this poem, such as riding in a sleigh that lands on the roof, entering through the chimney, and having a bag full of toys. St. Nicholas is described as being “chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf” with “a little round belly”, that “shook when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly”, in spite of which the “miniature sleigh” and “tiny reindeer” still indicate that he is physically diminutive. The reindeer were also named: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder and Blixem (Dunder and Blixem came from the old Dutch words for thunder and lightning, which were later changed to the more German sounding Donner and Blitzen).
Since then, the image of Santa Claus has been popularised through television, movies and children’s story books. While some dislike the idea of gift-giving at Christmas, believing that the lavish celebrations are not in line with their faith, or that Santa has become a symbol of materialism, others believe that it continues to honour the life and deeds of Nicholas, an individual beloved and revered as protector and helper of those in need.

The Truth is Always Stronger than a Lie
Once upon a time, the King of Benares went on a picnic in the forest. The beautiful flowers and trees and fruits made him very happy. As he was enjoying their beauty, he slowly went deeper and deeper into the forest. Before long, he became separated from his companions and realized that he was all alone.
Then he heard the sweet voice of a young woman. She was singing as she collected firewood. To keep from being afraid of being alone in the forest, the king followed the sound of the lovely voice. When he finally came upon the singer of the songs, he saw that she was a beautiful fair young woman, and immediately fell in love with her. They became very friendly, and the king became the father of the firewood woman’s child.
Later, he explained how he had gotten lost in the forest, and convinced her that he was indeed the King of Benares. She gave him directions for getting back to his palace. The king gave her his valuable signet ring, and said, “If you give birth to a baby girl, sell this ring and use the money to bring her up well. If our child turns out to be a baby boy, bring him to me along with this ring for recognition.” So saying, he departed for Benares.
In the fullness of time, the firewood woman gave birth to a cute little baby boy. Being a simple shy woman, she was afraid to take him to the fancy court in Benares, but she saved the king’s signet ring.
In a few years, the baby grew into a little boy. When he played with the other children in the village, they teased him and mistreated him, and even started fights with him. It was because his mother was not married that the other children picked on him. They yelled at him, “No-father! No-father! Your name should be No-father!”
Of course this made the little boy feel ashamed and hurt and sad. He often ran home crying to his mother. One day, he told her how the other children called him, “No-father! No-father! Your name should be No-father!” Then his mother said, “Don’t be ashamed, my son. You are not just an ordinary little boy. Your father is the King of Benares!”
The little boy was very surprised. He asked his mother, “Do you have any proof of this?” So she told him about his father giving her the signet ring, and that if the baby was a boy she should bring him to Benares, along with the ring as proof. The little boy said, “Let’s go then.” Because of what happened, she agreed, and the next day they set out for Benares.
When they arrived at the king’s palace, the gate keeper told the king the firewood woman and her little son wanted to see him. They went into the royal assembly hall, which was filled with the king’s ministers and advisers. The woman reminded the king of their time together in the forest. Finally she said, “Your majesty, here is your son.”
The king was ashamed in front of all the ladies and gentlemen of his court. So, even though he knew the woman spoke the truth, he said, “He is not my son!” Then the lovely young mother showed the signet ring as proof.
Again the king was ashamed and denied the truth, saying, “It is not my ring!”
Then the poor woman thought to herself, “I have no witness and no evidence to prove what I say. I have only my faith in the power of truth.” So she said to the king, “If I throw this little boy up into the air, if he truly is your son, may he remain in the air without falling. If he is not your son, may he fall to the floor and die!”
Suddenly, she grabbed the boy by his foot and threw him up into the air. Lo and behold, the boy sat in the cross-legged position, suspended in mid-air, without falling. Everyone was astonished, to say the least! Remaining in the air, the little boy spoke to the mighty king. “My lord, I am indeed a son born to you. You take care of many people who are not related to you. You even maintain countless elephants, horses and other animals. And yet, you do not think of looking after and raising me, your own son. Please do take care of me and my mother.”
Hearing this, the king’s pride was overcome. He was humbled by the truth of the little boy’s powerful words. He held out his arms and said, “Come to me my son, and I will take good care of you.”
Amazed by such a wonder, all the others in the court put out their arms. They too asked the floating little boy to come to them. But he went directly from mid-air into his father’s arms. With his son seated on his lap, the king announced that he would be the crown prince, and his mother would be the number one queen.
In this way, the king and all his court learned the power of truth. Benares became known as a place of honest justice. In time the king died. The grown up crown prince wanted to show the people that all deserve respect, regardless of birth. So he had himself crowned under the official name, “King No-father!” He went on to rule the kingdom in a generous and righteous way.
The moral is: The truth is always stronger than a lie.

The Creed of The Buddha
The Buddha is generally associated with the doctrine of Ahimsa. That is taken to be the be-all and end-all of his teachings. Hardly any one knows that what the Buddha taught is something very vast: far beyond Ahimsa. It is therefore necessary to set out in detail his tenets. I enumerate them below as I have understood them from my reading of the Tripitaka :
- Religion is necessary for a free Society.
- Not every Religion is worth having.
- Religion must relate to facts of life and not to theories and speculations about God, or Soul or Heaven or Earth.
- It is wrong to make God the center of Religion.
- It is wrong to make salvation of the soul as the center of Religion.
- It is wrong to make animal sacrifices to be the center of religion.
- Real Religion lives in the heart of man and not in the Shastras.
- Man and morality must be the center of religion. If not, Religion is a cruel superstition.
- It is not enough for Morality to be the ideal of life. Since there is no God it must become the Jaw of life.
- The function of Religion is to reconstruct the world and to make it happy and not to explain its origin or its end.
- That the unhappiness in the world is due to conflict of interest and the only way to solve it is to follow the Ashtanga Marga.
- That private ownership of property brings power to one class and sorrow to another.
- That it is necessary for the good of Society that this sorrow be removed by removing its cause.
- All human beings are equal.
- Worth and not birth is the measure of man.
- What is important is high ideals and not noble birth.
- Maitri or fellowship towards all must never be abandoned. One owes it even to one’s enemy.
- Every one has a right to learn. Learning is as necessary for man to live as food is.
- Learning without character is dangerous.
- Nothing is infallible. Nothing is binding forever. Every thing is subject to inquiry and examination.
- Nothing is final.
- Every thing is subject to the law of causation.
- Nothing is permanent or sanatan. Every thing is subject to change. Being is always becoming.
- War is wrong unless it is for truth and justice.
- The victor has duties towards the vanquished. This is the creed of the Buddha in a summary form. How ancient hut how fresh! How wide and how deep are his teachings!
