The Last 3 Wishes of Alexander the Great

On his deathbed, Alexander the Great asked his generals to carry out 3 last wishes:

“My first desire is that, my physicians alone must carry my coffin.”

Secondly, I desire that when my coffin is being carried to the grave, the path leading to the graveyard be strewn with gold, silver and precious stones which I have collected in my treasury.

My third and last wish is that both my hands be kept dangling out of my coffin.”

When his Generals asked him why he made such peculiar wishes he answered:

    “I would like the world to know of the three lessons I have just learned;

I want my physicians to carry my coffin because people should realize that No doctor on this earth can really cure anybody. They are powerless and cannot save a person from the clutches of death. So let not people take life for granted.

The second wish of strewing gold, silver and other riches on the path to the graveyard is to tell people that not even a fraction of gold will come with me. I spent all my life with the greed for power, earning riches but cannot take anything with me. Let people realize that it is a sheer waste of time to chase wealth.

And about my third wish of having my hands dangling out of the coffin, I wish my people to know that I came empty handed into this world and empty handed I go out of this world”.

With these words, he breathed his last breath.

    Dante’s Prayer

when the dark wood fell before me
and all the paths were overgrown
when the priests of pride say there is no other way
i tilled the sorrows of stone

i did not believe because i could not see
though you came to me in the night
when the dawn seemed forever lost
you showed me your love in the light of the stars

cast your eyes on the ocean
cast your soul to the sea
when the dark night seems endless
    please remember me

then the mountain rose before me
by the deep well of desire
    from the fountain of forgiveness
beyond the ice and the fire

though we share this humble path, alone
    how fragile is the heart

oh give these clay feet wings to fly
to touch the face of the stars

breathe life into this feeble heart
lift this mortal veil of fear

take these crumbled hopes, etched with tears
we’ll rise above these earthly cares

    please remember me
    please remember me …
